The Grant Writer will be a part of the national Development and Communications Team, partnering closely with the CEO, regional Executive Directors, and colleagues across the organization to support CollegeSpring’s fundraising efforts. This position reports to the Head of Development and Communications (Head of Dev Comm), and will have the opportunity to chart the course of a dynamic nonprofit organization as it prepares for scale and raises $11M in philanthropy by FY21.

The Grant Writer is primarily responsible for maintaining—and growing—a grants portfolio of $2M in FY19. S/he will develop and write grant proposals and reports to foundations and other grant-making organizations, and will persuasively communicate CollegeSpring’s mission and programs to potential funders. The Grant Writer will assemble and submit grant requests, conduct prospect research, maintain a calendar of submissions and other deadlines, and ensure all relevant funder information and correspondence in is up-to-date and accurate.


Project Management

  • Oversee and execute a diverse range of proposals, progress reports and related projects
  • Develop and manage effective processes and tools to enhance CollegeSpring’s grant effectiveness, including but not limited to:
    • Communicating and collaborating with key internal stakeholders
    • Managing inputs and deliverables from collaborators to ensure high quality materials are developed and deadlines are met
  • Enhancing CollegeSpring’s ability to capture and communicate program impact


  • Leverage RelSci and other tools to power research into (institutional) funding prospects generated by Regional Boards, Executive Directors, CEO, Head of Dev Comm, and National Board
  • Provide proactive research for National funding prospects and prepare CEO / Head of Dev Comm for external funder meetings
  • Respond to Regional requests for prospect research; provide research in a detailed and timely manner
  • Integrate prospect briefs into; institutionalize best practices in prospect research and meeting briefs

Proposal Writing and Reporting

  • Manage the development of proposals for all institutional donors and prospects, working closely with the Head of Dev Comm, Regional Executive Directors, and CEO to accurately and persuasively communicate programmatic objectives
  • Liaise with Finance to develop budgets and expenditure reports per funder guidelines
  • Assemble and synthesize key information related to proposals from within the organization and from outside sources
  • Respond to donor questions and feedback and revise proposals as needed
  • Draft and manage calendar of proposals and reports due and individual timelines for each deliverable
  • Collaborate with Programs & Impact team to assemble program data for purposes of donor reporting
  • Assemble stories from the field in partnership with Executive Directors, Programs Managers, and Programs Directors to tell the story of our programs and impact

Information Management 

  • Create and manage standardized templates related to proposal development, information gathering/synthesis, and donor reporting
  • Work closely with Communications Manager to draw upon and add to CollegeSpring’s core messaging, providing a key resource for knowledge and program successes to ensure organizational communication is accurate, timely and reflects the latest initiatives
  • Utilize for knowledge management and deadline tracking
  • Ensure the accuracy of the institutional pipeline


  • A strong commitment to CollegeSpring’s mission, vision, and strategic direction, including a strong belief in the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in education or related field a plus.
  • 2-3 years of grant writing experience; expertise in education, youth development or college access preferred.
  • Excellent communication, persuasive writing, editing and presentation skills.
  • Strong project management, time management, coordination, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent analytical skills; able to quickly grasp and effectively communicate complex concepts
  • Demonstrated ability to excel in a team-based environment.
  • Experience working with remote teams preferred.
  • Strong research skills to identify and qualify prospective institutional donors and communications opportunities; knowledge of the funding landscape in college access and education reform is ideal but not necessary.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit with a desire to work with an ambitious team in a rapidly changing environment.
