She later earned her MPA and JD from St. Mary’s University.

As CollegeSpring grows, Kathy will help shape our program strategy and deepen our impact alongside educators and school partners. In the Q&A below, get to know Kathy, the experiences that have shaped her approach, and what excites her about CollegeSpring’s next chapter.

Tell us about yourself!

My career has been centered on equity, student achievement, and removing barriers to success. From managing a college readiness program embedded in Austin ISD high schools to serving as the state director of adult education and literacy, I focused on scaling impactful programs while centering student success. I am excited to bring that experience to CollegeSpring.

Outside of work, I am usually spending time with my family, cooking or baking, and playing pickleball when I can. I also love escape rooms, video games, coffee, and going to the movies.

Why CollegeSpring?

I was drawn to CollegeSpring because of its sharp focus on unlocking opportunities for K12 students through academic readiness. In my experience, I have seen how students with access to additional support to build these skills are able to increase their postsecondary options. CollegeSpring’s program model of embedded support directly within schools levels the playing field, and I’m honored to drive that work forward.

What role have tests or preparation for tests played in your life?

As the first in my family to navigate the college-going process, I had to rely on my high school counseling office for support with exploring my options for college. A counselor recommended that I take the ACT even though I had already taken the SAT, and I am glad I did. My ACT score helped me qualify for the Presidential Scholarship at Baylor University, making my college degree more affordable for my family.

Is there a specific educator who played a direct role in shaping your success?

I had many amazing teachers, but my English IV AP teacher, Mrs. Schifflett, was instrumental in improving my research and writing abilities. She taught us a methodical approach to developing a strong research paper. While it seemed tedious at times, her method helped me throughout college as I had to write dozens of research papers during my time as a student. An overwhelming project became manageable, and I consistently received high grades for my research papers because of her guidance.

Stay tuned to hear more from Kathy and how she plans to help drive CollegeSpring’s mission in support of students across the country!
